Teaching in Qatar, without the surprises.
Qatar's private and international schools hire qualified teachers from abroad, your school sponsors your visa, and there is no income tax on your salary. The slow part is paperwork: Qatar doesn't accept apostilles, so your degree needs full legalisation before you fly.

Your move to Qatar in
five steps.
The order matters. Most delays come from starting the documents too late.
-
Check your qualifications
A degree and a teaching qualification for the subject and age group you will teach. Distance and online degrees can be refused, so check yours first.
-
Start attestation early
Verify at home, legalise through your foreign ministry, get the Qatar embassy stamp, then MOFA authentication in Doha.
-
Check the contract before you sign
Salary, housing, flights, medical cover, end-of-service pay and notice terms, all in writing.
-
Arrive and complete residence
Your school sponsors you. Medical, fingerprints and the residence permit must be done within 30 days of arrival.
-
Set up your life
Bank account, phone plan and lease usually need your Qatar ID, so bring enough money to cover the wait.
- Who hires: private and international schools recruit teachers from abroad. Your school sponsors your work visa and residence permit.
- What you need: a degree and a teaching qualification, documents legalised for Qatar, a police clearance and a passport with plenty of validity left.
- Attestation: Qatar isn't part of the Apostille Convention, so documents need the full legalisation chain, ending with Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA).
- Tax: Qatar doesn't tax salaries.
- Family: to sponsor your family in the private sector you need a salary of QR10,000, or QR6,000 with family housing from your employer.
- School year: the 2026–27 year began on 30 August 2026.
Who can teach in Qatar?
Qatar's Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MOEHE) sets the qualification rules for staff in private schools. In September 2026 it replaced prior approval of each new hire with a declaration system: schools now hire directly within the approved criteria, and the Ministry checks qualifications through inspections.
In practice, schools look for a bachelor's degree, a recognised teaching qualification, and experience in the subject and age group you will teach. The Ministry also runs a Professional Licence for teachers already working in Qatar. Its levels depend on years of experience, training hours and annual evaluations, so it's something you build once you're there, not a document you need before you're hired.
Before you pay for attestation, ask your school in writing which documents it will submit for you and whether your degree type is accepted. It's the cheapest way to avoid starting again.
Attestation: the part that takes longest.
Qatar isn't a party to the Hague Apostille Convention. That means an apostille on its own won't do. Your degree goes through a chain: it's verified where it was issued, legalised by your country's foreign ministry, stamped by the Qatar embassy in your country, then authenticated by MOFA in Doha. MOFA asks for a bachelor's degree to be submitted with its transcript, and charges QR100 per certificate. MOFA also offers a "complete attestation outside Qatar" service, which sends your document to the Qatari mission abroad for you.
| Step | South Africa | United Kingdom |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Verify | SAQA verification letter for your degree (SAQA says within 20 working days). Matric goes through Umalusi. | A UK solicitor or notary certifies each document. |
| 2. Legalise at home | DIRCO issues a Certificate of Authentication, free of charge. Book online: walk-ins stopped on 1 September 2026. By courier it takes 3–4 weeks. | FCDO legalisation: £45, usually up to 25 working days, plus postage. |
| 3. Qatar embassy | Qatar Embassy in Pretoria. Confirm its current requirements and fees directly before you send anything. | Qatar Embassy London: £23 per educational document, at least 4–5 working days. It needs your transcript and a covering letter, and does not attest distance or online certificates below MSc or PhD. |
| 4. MOFA Qatar | Authentication in Doha, QR100 per certificate. Usually handled with your school's PRO. | Same as South Africa. |
SAQA verification isn't the same as a SAQA evaluation. DIRCO needs the verification letter before it will authenticate a degree; we found no Qatari requirement for an evaluation. DIRCO also does not authenticate original qualification certificates without that verification. Teachers from other countries follow the same pattern: verify at home, your foreign ministry, the Qatar embassy, then MOFA.

From arrival to your Qatar ID.
Your school sponsors your work visa. Teachers from India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal do their medical and biometrics at a Qatar Visa Centre at home before the visa is issued. Everyone else has the medical at the Medical Commission after arrival. Residence procedures must be completed within 30 days of entering Qatar, and missing the deadline can bring a fine. Your Qatar ID (QID) follows, and the Metrash2 app handles most residency services after that.
Until your QID arrives, you usually can't open a bank account, get a proper phone plan or sign a lease. What I tell every teacher heading to Doha:
- Bring at least two months of living costs in money you can reach, because your first salary can be delayed until your bank account exists.
- Book your medical as soon as your school's PRO gives the go-ahead, and keep the clearance slip safe.
- Carry spare passport photos to every government appointment.
- Download Metrash2 before you arrive.
- Ask your school exactly what the PRO handles and what you do yourself.
The free Qatar Immigration Checklist covers each step from landing to your QID, including sponsoring your family.
Bringing your family.
Under the Ministry of Interior's family residence rules, a private-sector sponsor must work in a technical or specialised job and earn QR10,000 a month, or QR6,000 with family housing provided by the employer. You also need health insurance for your family for the whole stay, and children aged 6 to 18 must be enrolled in a licensed school. Sons can be sponsored up to age 25, and daughters while unmarried.
Your spouse can work in Qatar with a work permit from the Ministry of Labour. A spouse who wants to teach has to meet the same qualification rules as any other teacher. School fees are a big cost, so ask whether your contract includes a fee allowance for your children before you sign.
Housing, heat and money.
Most contracts include housing or a housing allowance, but the contract rarely tells you the area, the condition of the flat or the commute. Ask where the housing is, whether it's on a compound, what "furnished" includes, and for photos. Many expat teachers live in areas like Al Waab, Ain Khaled, Maamoura and the Pearl, and the cost and feel of each are very different.
Summer (May to September) changes how you live: outdoor life moves to early mornings and evenings, and many teachers travel home for the summer. Salaries aren't taxed in Qatar, but the way a school splits basic pay and allowances changes what lands in your account, so read the pay section of your offer carefully. The international teaching contract checklist shows what to check.

Changing schools or leaving.
Qatar's 2020 labour reforms removed exit permits for almost all workers and ended the need for a no-objection certificate to change employer. Notice is one month if you have worked up to two years, and two months after that. Check your contract too, because it can set its own terms for notice, flights and end-of-service pay.
Common mistakes to avoid.
- Paying for an apostille and stopping there. Qatar needs full legalisation.
- Going to DIRCO without a SAQA or Umalusi verification letter, or without a booking.
- Assuming a distance or online degree will be accepted.
- Starting attestation late. SAQA, DIRCO by courier and the FCDO can each take weeks.
- Planning to bring family on a package below the threshold, or without family housing and health insurance.
- Missing the 30-day residence deadline after you arrive.

What teachers ask us
Real questions from the comments. If one sounds like yours, you're not the only one.
I received an offer and the contract was 4 years long😳 nooo, I can’t be stuck with the same salary for 4 years. Is this normal in Qatar?

Frequently asked questions.
Do I need an apostille for Qatar?
No, an apostille alone isn't enough. Qatar isn't part of the Hague Apostille Convention, so your documents go through full legalisation: verification at home, your foreign ministry, the Qatar embassy in your country, then Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Do South African teachers need a SAQA evaluation for Qatar?
What you need is a SAQA verification letter for your degree (Umalusi for matric). DIRCO uses it before issuing a Certificate of Authentication. We found no Qatari requirement for a separate SAQA evaluation.
Can I teach in Qatar with an online degree?
Be careful. The Qatar Embassy in London does not attest distance or online certificates, except postgraduate MSc and PhD degrees. Check with your school and the embassy before you start attestation.
Do I need a Qatari teaching licence before I arrive?
There's no sign of that. The Ministry of Education's Professional Licence is built on years of experience, training hours and annual evaluations in Qatar, so teachers earn it once they are working there.
Who handles my residence permit and Qatar ID?
Your school sponsors you, and its PRO usually guides you through it. The medical, fingerprints and residence permit must be completed within 30 days of arrival, and you get your Qatar ID after that.
Can I bring my family to Qatar?
Yes, if you meet the rules. In the private sector you need a salary of QR10,000, or QR6,000 with family housing from your employer, plus health insurance for your family and school places for children aged 6 to 18.
Can my spouse work in Qatar?
Yes, with a work permit from the Ministry of Labour. A spouse who wants to teach must meet the same qualification rules as any other teacher.
Can I change schools in Qatar?
Yes. Since 2020 most workers no longer need a no-objection certificate or an exit permit. Notice is one month if you have worked up to two years, and two months after that.
